We’re so excited to welcome your child to the CTY community this summer! Attending CTY can be a fun and rewarding adventure for both students and their families. We want to offer some tips to help set your child up for a great experience.

CTY is a little different from school or home in a few key ways:

  • Deep focus on one subject: Students at our day sites spend about four hours each day diving into a subject they love. There’s also about an hour of homework on weekdays. They’ll stay with the same teacher and classmates, which helps build a strong sense of connection. Since students come from a variety of backgrounds, adjusting to this new learning environment might take some time, but it’s also part of the fun.
  • Building independence: While staff are always nearby and ready to help, students are encouraged to take initiative when they need support or have questions. This is a great chance for them to grow their confidence and independence in a safe, supportive environment.
  • A busy, structured day: The CTY schedule is full of activities, classes, and transition times. While there’s not a lot of unstructured time, there are plenty of opportunities to connect, play, and explore with staff guidance every step of the way.

Before the program:

Talk with your child and help them see this as an exciting challenge. Read the CTY materials together including the Student Code of Conduct and site information packet, which contains important details about what to bring, what to leave at home, site logistics, and daily routines.

During the program:

On opening day: Be sure to meet with your child’s instructor and program assistant. Program assistants help guide students through the day and play a big role in making the experience fun and welcoming. You might also want to introduce yourself to the academic counselor, who will most likely be stationed at the medical table during check-in. They’re a helpful resource if you ever have concerns or just want to check in.

Students will be learning new schedules, procedures, and site traditions and it’s normal for it to take time to feel fully settled. Reassure them that it will all become more familiar each day.

If your child expresses anything you find worrisome, call the site office and speak to an administrator.

On closing day: You’ll have the chance to meet your child’s instructor and discuss their academic progress. Celebrate your child’s successes in the program, and use any challenges as a learning experience.
