Are campus facilities and services available for staff use during the session?
Access to campus facilities varies by site. If hired, you will receive additional information in your site packet before the summer program begins. Staff at residential sites may have access to facilities such as the library, fitness center, outdoor recreational spaces, computer labs, student center, and other campus amenities. Some facilities may require a fee.
Are staff paid for training completed before they arrive onsite?
All staff receive an additional $100 to complete the required training before they arrive onsite. Senior administrative staff must attend virtual training on the first Saturday and Sunday of June and are paid an additional $400 for attendance. Training pay is included in the first paycheck.
Are staff required to live on campus at residential sites?
At residential sites, all resident assistants, senior resident assistants, and most administrative staff members are required to live on campus during programming. Instructional staff members who live locally may commute.
Are travel expenses to and from residential or day/commuter sites for summer staff covered by CTY?
CTY provides domestic air or train travel for eligible staff assigned to residential sites more than 300 miles from their residence. All travel arrangements must be made through World Travel, Johns Hopkins University’s designated travel agency. CTY cannot reimburse travel purchased outside this system or mileage for personal vehicle use. CTY covers the cost of the flight or train ticket but does not cover additional expenses such as seat selection or baggage fees.
Staff are strongly encouraged to select sites close to their summer residence when completing their application. Whenever possible, CTY will prioritize placements at sites that minimize travel distance. Staff who qualify for travel assistance will be contacted after hiring to coordinate their travel arrangements.
Can I work only one term at a site that runs both terms?
To preserve consistency, we prefer to hire employees to work both terms whenever possible, though applicants available for only one term are still welcome to apply. We encourage staff to indicate their availability for each term in their application.
Can you accommodate staff members’ dietary needs and preferences?
Our full-time staff work closely with dining facilities to ensure that there are a variety of options available for students and staff. If you have a particular dietary need, please let us know so that we can discuss possible options.
Do I have to submit a new application if I previously worked for CTY?
All applicants must submit a new application every year. Your application should include an updated resume.
Is room and board provided for staff at day sites?
No. Staff working at day sites must be local and are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation. If you require housing during the program, we recommend applying for a position at one of our residential sites, where housing is provided.
What are the living arrangements for staff at residential sites?
At residential sites, room and board—including breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are provided.
Each staff member will have their own dorm-style room. Bathrooms and living-room areas may be shared with other staff members. Residential Assistants have their own dorm room, located within the same dorms as the students they supervise. Common spaces will be available for staff to work and socialize.
What are the weekend responsibilities for staff at residential sites?

- Instructors and teaching assistants have weekends off from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening, except during opening and closing weekends.
- Resident assistants work throughout the weekend, supervising students during campus and residence hall activities.

What is the dress code for staff at CTY sites?
The dress code is generally casual and should be appropriate to the position and role. Staff are asked to look professional on opening and closing days when they meet with families.
What is the onboarding and training process for CTY in-person summer staff once they have been hired?
After accepting a job offer, staff must complete the required reference checks, background checks, and Form I-9 for employment eligibility verification. Depending on the position and site, additional requirements may apply, including fingerprinting and state-specific clearances.
Once the required checks are cleared, staff receive a JHU email address and login credentials for applicable JHU systems. Staff can then complete their payroll and tax information and access required onboarding tasks.
Before the start of the summer program, staff will be assigned training courses through JHU’s MyLearning portal. Senior administrators will also participate in training on the first Saturday and Sunday in June and receive a training manual. Staff in all other positions will receive a handbook, access to curricular resources, and/or other digital materials, as applicable. Training pay is included in the first paycheck.
What should I expect after applying for a summer position?
CTY reviews applications on a rolling basis and continues recruiting as positions remain available, or new openings arise throughout the start of programming. Candidates should receive communication within 30 days of submitting their application regarding the status of their application and any next steps.
Will I need to pay for parking if I drive to my CTY site?
Parking availability and costs vary by host site. Staff at both residential and day sites who choose to drive and commute daily will be responsible for any applicable parking fees. We recommend contacting your site contact for parking information before the start of the summer program.
