Lab Materials
- Lab 1: Modeling Earth's Cycles
- Colored chalk of the same size (Make sure it is not labeled “dust free” and is not comprised of Plaster of Paris.)
- ½ cup salt
- 2 plastic cups or glasses
- ½ cup vinegar
- Spoon
- Paper towels
- Timer
- oven mitts
- 1 clear mixing bowl or flat-bottomed container, heat-resistant so it does not melt
- 1 small cup, heavy enough so it does not float
- a teakettle with hot water
- a stove or electric hot plate
- Plastic wrap
- 8-12 ice cubes
- Lab 2: Using Models to Represent Earth and Space Phenomena
- This lab allows you to choose one of three options. The required materials will depend upon which lab you choose.
- Lab 3: The Effect of Temperature and Salinity on Gases in the Ocean
- Water
- Plastic Resealable bags
- pH Strips
- Straw
- Tablespoon
- You will design part of this investigation yourself. The lab includes suggested materials. Additional required materials will depend on your procedure.
Activity Materials
- 3 crayons of different colors
- Cheese grater (it is best to purchase a cheap one because it will be hard to clean up after)
- 1-2 sheets of aluminum foil at least the size of a sheet of paper
- Microwave
- Microwave-safe dish
- Tongs
- Paper cup
- Potholder
- Empty small bottle (examples: small 8 oz water bottle, soy sauce bottle, travel size bottle, spice bottle, glass salt shaker)
- Balloons
- 1 box of chalk (Look for chalk that says calcium carbonate on ingredient list, such as Crayola or Prang brands. Do not use dustless chalk.)
- Vinegar
- Resealable sandwich bag
- Rolling pin
- Measuring cup/spoons
- Baking soda
- Dice
- String or yarn (~1 meter)
- Straws
- Paperclip
- 2 rubber washers
- Ruler or meter stick
- Safety goggles or glasses
- Timer
- Construction Paper
- Tape
- Scissors
- Permanent Marker
- Eye dropper
- Drawing compass
- Clay
- Two identical 6 in x 6 in clear containers that are 4-5 inches deep
- Disposable plastic bottle (from water, soda, juice, etc.)
- Food coloring
- Heat source (lamp, heating pad, Sun)
- Thermometer
- 3 pieces of card stock, about 8.5 inches × 11 inches
- 3 sheets of printer paper, about 8.5 inches × 11 inches
- 3 pieces of cardboard, about 8.5 inches × 11 inches
- 1 long, shallow plastic container, around 30 inches long, 15 inches wide, and 5 inches deep
- a small plate or tray
- a small bag of sand, about 2 pounds
