Here’s what families of students who are currently enrolled in an Individually Paced (IP) Online course need to know about updates to the course model:

  • Effective July 14, 2022, all IP courses will be automatically converted from a “time-based” to a “course-based” model. This course-based model maintains the flexibility of the time-based model but provides a more intuitive experience for families. By providing students with an optimal amount of flexibility, students can take breaks as needed while still remaining engaged in the course, so they can stay on track to succeed and complete the course. The course-based model also empowers students to be active participants in their learning and academic goal setting, and facilitates the development of valuable communication and time-management skills.
  • We have emailed families of students with time-based enrollments to notify them of these updates and their options for moving forward. For students whose enrollments started before July 14, this will not impact their course content or instructor, but it may require working with the instructor to ensure remaining coursework is completed by the end of the course.
  • CTY policies regarding course completion, re-enrollment, extensions, pauses, and advancements will be updated on July 14 to align with the course-based model.

Course-based IP courses are still individually paced

Students select their preferred start date and, while the course access time is fixed, work through the material at their own pace. While the enrollment model has changed, the teaching approach for course-based IP courses remains the same.

Maximum allowed time to complete a course in the new course-based model
Check the course description on our website to find the recommended course length.

If the recommended length is 3 months, you will have up to 4.5 months to finish the course. If the recommended length is 6 months, you will have up to 9 months to finish the course. If you are enrolled in a time-based IP course and are converted to the course-based model on July 14, you will receive an email with your updated enrollment end date on July 14, 2022. You will also be able to view your updated enrollment end date in MyCTY after July 14, 2022.

If you would like to pause a course in the new course-based model:

You can take breaks in the course anytime, as long as you plan to finish the course by the course end date. Please communicate any breaks to your instructor in advance. You no longer need to submit pause/resume requests in MyCTY.

If you would like to re-enroll for more time in the new course-based model:

Unfortunately this is not an option in the new model. However, the course access time given should be sufficient to complete the course if working at a reasonable pace, even if you must take some time off for vacation, illness, etc. Students are provided with 1.5x the recommended length of the course to finish the course. Please stay in good communication with your instructor throughout the course to stay on track to finish on time.

If you complete a course-based course early:

Students may complete a course-based individually paced course any time before the end date. No refund or credit is given for early completion, because tuition is set per course and not for a specific period of time. Students who wish to take another course should submit a program application to enroll in another course.

If you don’t complete a course on time:

CTY is committed to supporting students in achieving their academic goals. The instructor will have conversations with the student regarding pacing and course progress throughout the course. Students who do not complete a course on time but wish to continue working on the course may repurchase the course and complete it on audit status.

If you have hold time remaining from an IP course and want to apply it toward an IP course that starts on or after July 1:

You will receive a prorated credit by the end of July that you can apply toward the course-based model. Credits must be used before March 31, 2023.

If you purchased more enrollment time prior to July 1, 2022, than the recommended course length of your current course:
Your enrollment will be converted to the time-based model effective July 14, 2022. We will subtract your remaining time from the recommended time of your enrolled course to calculate your excess remaining time. We will then provide a prorated credit on account, if the excess time is greater than 5 days. Credits must be used before March 31, 2023.

If you would like to use a credit on your account:

When submitting the program application for your course, in the payment section you will have the option to apply the full or partial balance of credit towards your payment.

  • Expect an email by the end of July with details about the credit on your account. You can also view your credit in the MyCTY parent portal under the Payments section once you receive an email letting you know your credit is available.
  • Your credit will become available to use once you receive the email with your credit balance. Please expect this email by end of July. Please check both parent email accounts as well as your spam folder. If you still don’t see the email by July 31, contact ctyinfo@jhu.edu for assistance.
  • A credit may be applied toward a course or club—including session-based, LIVE, and On Campus Programs, that starts after March 2023, as long as the credit is applied before March 31, 2023.
  • The prorated credit will be calculated based on the original tuition and the percentage of unused enrollment time.
  • Note: If you received financial aid for your previous IP course, please be advised financial aid is not guaranteed for your new course. If you would like to be considered for financial assistance when using your credit towards a new course, you will need to re-apply for financial aid. Limited financial aid is available, so we encourage early applications.
  • When submitting the program application for your course, in the payment section you will have the option to apply the full or partial balance of credit towards your payment.

  • Credits cannot be refunded.
  • Credits cannot be retroactively applied toward any courses registered before July 1, 2022.

If you have placed your IP course on pause and will not be ready to resume coursework on July 14, 2022:

On July 14, 2022, your enrollment will automatically convert to the course-based model, but you do not need to resume your coursework immediately. You will have either 4.5 or 9 months to finish the course, depending on the course. You should communicate your plans to your instructor.

If you are unable to finish your course within the maximum allowed time, either 4.5 or 9 months depending on your course, after July 1, 2022:

You may choose one of the following options:

  • Switch your enrollment status to “audit”
  • Work with your instructor to come up with pacing that is achievable with your schedule
If you previously started an IP course, and your enrollment time expired before July 14, 2022, but you still want to finish out your course:

You may repurchase the course and complete it on audit status.

If your time-based IP course was set to end on July 1 through July 14:

Students with IP courses with end dates from July 1 – July 14 will automatically receive an enrollment extension so they can continue with their coursework without interruption until the transition to the course-based model goes until effect on July 14.

If you would like to apply your credit to another course

A credit may be applied toward a course or club—including individually paced, session-based, LIVE, and On Campus Programs, that starts after March 2023, as long as the credit is applied before March 31, 2023. When submitting the program application for your course, in the payment section you will have the option to apply the full or partial balance of credit towards your payment.

Credits cannot be refunded . If you would like assistance selecting your next course, please do not hesitate to ask!

If you are enrolled in a time-based course on July 14:

  • Students with IP courses in progress on July 14 will be automatically placed into the course-based version of the class and given full access time (either 4.5 or 9 months, depending on the course). This will not impact course progress, course content, or the assigned instructor, but it may require working with the instructor to ensure remaining coursework is completed by the end of the course.
  • Please check the course description on the CTY website to find the recommended course length. If the recommended length is 3 months, you will have up to 4.5 months to finish the course. If the recommended length is 6 months, you will have up to 9 months to finish the course.
  • If you are enrolled in a time-based IP course and are converted to the course-based model on July 14, you will receive an email with your updated enrollment end date on July 14, 2022.
