Typical class size

A typical summer On-Campus Programs class has between 12 and 18 students, depending on the grade level of students and type of class. Each class has an instructional assistant and an instructor, so the student/teacher ratio in all classes is low.

Class times and coursework

Summer On-Campus Programs students typically spend 5.5 to 7 hours a day in class, five days a week, in class, depending on the grade level. Our students enjoy academic challenge, and we design our coursework to engage and inspire them. At residential sites, students do all their work within the academic day so students may also enjoy the social experience of attending CTY. No homework is assigned. Nonetheless, if students feel overwhelmed, our staff are available to provide support.

Because students at our day sites have less time in class than their residential peers, they are asked to set aside 30 to 60 minutes, five days a week, for homework. Internet access may be required to complete some assignments.

Textbooks and other course supply costs

The cost for textbooks is included in tuition. You will receive a list of required course materials on arrival day. To minimize expenses, bring basic school supplies from home, such as pens, pencils, crayons or colored pencils, notebooks, three-ring binders, loose leaf paper, USB drives, and/or rulers. For math and science courses, consider bringing a scientific calculator, protractor, and/or compass.

Students attending CTY’s day and residential programs enjoy a structured day of learning and recreational activities, all of which are required. We cannot accommodate requests for students to work on coursework from other camps or programs, including CTY online courses, while attending our program.

Course completion documents

CTY instructors write one-page evaluations of each student’s work. These evaluations include examples of the student's participation, potential areas for growth, and suggestions for further study. Families of summer On-Campus Programs students will receive an email about one month after their course concludes notifying them that their evaluation is available in MyCTY. A digital certificate of participation for the summer course will also be provided. To view your student’s course completion certificate, log in to MyCTY as a parent, select “Student Participation” in the left navigation bar, select “CTY Class Participation,” and then select the course title. Click the “Evaluation” link to find the evaluation and certificate.
