Problem-Based courses are CTY’s most collaborative online courses. Students have one hour of synchronous meetings with the instructor on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays, immediately followed by a one-hour session of student-led, synchronous group work with their small student group. The instructor is online with the students to facilitate in these small group meetings as needed. Additional student-led, synchronous group work with their small student group will need to be scheduled by each student group. The students are responsible for scheduling those meetings. For much of the course, students let their curiosity drive their learning. The instructor provides live teaching sessions and guides and encourages students as they think through obstacles, and keeps individual groups on track. Students have the opportunity to collaborate with classmates in the online space and to make connections that last well beyond the course’s end date.
